February is National AMD/Low Vision Awareness Month
Do you get up in the morning and get moving without stopping to think about your eyesight? Do you take your vision for granted? Most of us do!! But should we?
Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss afflicting over 15 million adults over the age of 50! To understand how AMD affects your vision - take your left hand and cover your left eye...now make a fist with your right hand. Take your right fist and place it directly in front of your right eye. The only thing you should see is images in your periphery or side-vision. WOW! Try it!! You will be amazed!! What if this is how you functioned with the world?
Now...what if you receive a low vision diagnosis? That can be just as devastating. Low vision is a visual impairment that cannot be corrected with standard lenses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. Having low vision can make reading, shopping, cooking, writing, watching TV, and other every day tasks quite challenging leaving you feeling anxious, helpless and depressed.
Drs. Pietig, Hansen, and Waters take age-related macular degeneration and low vision impairment seriously. The early and intermediate stages, especially of AMD, usually start without symptoms. A complete, comprehensive, and individualized eye health exam is important in the assessment of both of these conditions. There are so many resources our doctors, here at Ankeny Family Vision Center, have at their disposal.
