A cataract is an opacity or cloudiness of the crystalline lens of the eye. Many patients believe that a cataract is a growth over the surface of the eye. But a cataract is actually inside the eye.
The primary symptom of a cataract is vision that is cloudy or blurry. Usually this cloudiness is gradual over a period of several months. Glare at night or in bright sunlight can be another annoying problem.
When a cataract progresses to a point that causes significant visual compromise to a patient, surgery may be necessary to restore good visual function.
Drs. Hansen, Pietigs, or Seelye are able to evaluate whether the visual symptoms a patient has are due to cataracts or some other visual condition.
As an exclusive service to our patients, Dr. Bradley Hammer of Des Moines Eye Surgeons, offers pre-surgical cataract evaluations once per month at Ankeny Family Vision Center. This allows our patients the convenience of driving to Des Moines only for the day of surgery. Postoperative care is available in our office by our doctors.
